Rehoming and Surrendering Animals
We are NOT accepting DOG strays or surrenders from November 7 through at least November 21, 2022. Learn more...
- Make sure you exhaust all other resources before surrendering an animal to the shelter.
- Check with friends, relatives, and co-workers to try and rehome the animal or try Home To HomeTM, an online service that helps owners rehome their pets within the community.
- If you are dealing with extreme behavior or medical issues it would be best to work with your veterinarian to decide on the proper course of action which may even be euthanasia if the problem cannot be solved or the animal is dangerous to rehome.
If you must surrender an animal to the shelter bring as much information to you as possible. You must fill out and sign our owner surrender paperwork and the more information you provide, the better. The information allows us to make more informed decisions about what is best for that animal as well as communicate about that animal to potential adopters. Please be mindful that we cannot guarantee the placement of any animal. All animals will be medically and behaviorally evaluated before being placed for adoption.
Currently, there is no fee involved with surrendering an animal to the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter. It is best to surrender an animal during our business hours which are 11:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., 7 days a week. If you are outside of San Juan County, New Mexico, we ask that you go to your nearest local shelter to surrender your animal.
Effective March 1, 2018, the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter will no longer be able to accept stray, lost, or surrendered animals coming from the City of Bloomfield or the incorporated Town of Kirtland. The municipalities were offered the opportunity to partner with the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter but decided to enter into an exclusive agreement with the Aztec Animal Shelter for the care of animals coming from within their jurisdiction. If you have found a lost pet in Bloomfield or incorporated Kirtland and would like to surrender it to a shelter you need to take it to the Aztec Animal Shelter.
Euthanasia
We do offer owner requested euthanasia services during our business hours. However, we encourage people to take their animals to their vet if at all possible. Ours is a donation based service with a suggested donation of $30. Unfortunately, you cannot be with your animal during the procedure, in order to do so, you would need to take your animal to a veterinarian.
